nce Authority: A deep dive into revolving fund and energy program sustaina
bility</a>\nby Debra Kean (DeVry University) as part of DVU Data Science S
eminar Series\n\n\nAbstract\nThe Georgia Environmental Finance Authority (
GEFA) relies on three primary income sources: Congressional allotments\, s
tate allotments\, and loan fees or repayments from assistance recipients.
The allocation of these funds is determined by the political figures and p
arties in office. A political shift toward conservative policies could pro
mpt state and federal authorities to reduce funding for GEFA in favor of a
lternative initiatives. This reduction would likely have a substantial imp
act on GEFA's financial stability and the scope of its programs.\n

rch/13/">Calculating chuckles: When algorithms go for laughs</a>\nby Debra
Kean (DeVry University) as part of DVU Data Science Seminar Series\n\n\nA
bstract\nI examine the intersection of artificial intelligence (AI)\, humo
r comprehension\, and mathematics education through the lens of a recurrin
g classroom assignment. Over several years\, my students in a beginning al
gebra course were asked to find and explain math jokes\, yielding a wide v
ariety of responses. However\, after I integrated AI into the assignment\,
the diversity of jokes sharply declined\, with AI frequently repeating th
e same well-known joke. Drawing on research and classroom experiments\, I
explore the limitations of current AI models in processing and generating
humor\, particularly puns\, in contrast to human performance. Case studies
—including AI's struggles with puns and cartoon caption contests—under
score AI's reliance on statistical patterns rather than genuine understand
ing. I conclude that while AI can mimic humor's surface structure\, its de
ficiencies are instructive: recognizing these limitations may help prevent
overconfident outputs and foster the development of more reliable\, emoti
 onally intelligent AI tools.\n
